If you’re like me—whether you’re in school or long out—September signals the time we hit the malls and do a wardrobe refresh. But don’t just head to the clothes racks. One of the best ways to update your back-to-school look is with some great jewelry. Here are three back-to-school cool jewelry trends you won’t want to miss.—Sue Perry

                                                                              Pins are back!

We know, you’ve heard it before. But this year broochlike embellishments are everywhere—giving a cool vibe to everything from skirts and jackets to handbags and shoes. Of course, designers are sewing these doodads right onto their clothes, but you can easily get the look by pinning some sparkly brooches onto any wardrobe basic. Unlike rings and bangles, shoppers are going to have to hunt a little harder if they want to add some pins to their jewelry collection. However, a few designers, have included brooches in their lines. We especially love Dana Bronfman’s brooch, shown top, that converts to a pendant. So smart! And Mikimoto’s double hearts pin, above, has—well—won us over.

Try this! Skip the lapel and pin a few sparklers in unusual places—at the hip or scattered across a skirt, as shown above.  Or choose a few smaller pins to brighten up a boring handbag.

                                                           Charms are still charming.

Charms and other trinkets are hotter than ever. Beyond bracelets, you can find them dangling from necklaces and even rings. It’s a great way to give your style an extra dose of personality. Whether you want to start a charm bracelet or add to one, you’re in luck. Many big designers, including David Yurman, shown top right, and Lagos, offer a nice selection of charms and pendants.

Try this! Mix it up. Let your charms stand out by combining different sizes and shapes and mixing gemstones and metals.

                                                                                                  Stacks—and more stacks—rule.

Stacking bracelets and rings are also still going strong. It’s a great way to bring a pop of sparkle and gleam to outfits. If you need to add to your collection, no problem. All of your favorite designers, including Dana Bronfman, top left and Dana Rebecca, top right, offer bangles and rings of varying styles that can stand alone or work together.

Try this! For a bolder statement, add a watch to a mix of bangles. And when stacking rings, choose those with flat edges and single stones that can be more easily twisted on top of one another.
