If you’re a watch geek, like us, you’re going to love the story behind the new Normalzeit, shown. We caught up with the designer, Fredi Brodmann who told us that the octagonal stainless case and dots and deltoids hour and minute markers were inspired by the famed Normalzeit Cube Clock that dotted the streets of Vienna at the turn of the century so people could set their pocket watches to them. Brodmann, who grew up in Vienna, turned the classic design into handsome timepieces made in Asia with Japanese movements; there are self winding and battery operated versions for both men and women. The watch, which retails for around $500, is available with leather or silicone watch bands, is water resistant up to 50 meters, and the dial glows in the dark. “It’s like wearing a piece of history,” Brodmann told us. That’s for sure, because all 78 of the historic Viennese clocks have long been replaced. When we met with Brodmann he had just learned that the Modern Museum of Art was going to carry the Normalzeit this Spring. Wempe Jewelers and the Neue Gallerie in New York also carry it.
